Prince Karim Aga Khan Passes Away at 88; National Leaders Express Condolences

Lisbon, Portugal – February 5, 2025: Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, the spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslim community, passed away at the age of 88 in Lisbon, Portugal, surrounded by his family. Born in Geneva, Switzerland, on December 13, 1936, he became the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims in 1957 at just 20 years old. Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to humanitarian work, founding the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) to promote healthcare, education, and economic development in over 30 countries. He was also known for his contributions to the equestrian world.

Pakistani leaders mourned his passing, acknowledging his exceptional role in global development. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called him a visionary leader committed to poverty alleviation and social welfare. Acting President Yousuf Raza Gilani praised his contributions to peace and education, while Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi termed his services to Pakistan’s education and healthcare sectors as unforgettable. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and senior leaders expressed solidarity with the Ismaili community, recognizing his immense contributions to health, education, and global humanitarian efforts.

All leaders extended heartfelt condolences, praying for the departed soul and his grieving family.
