Increase in Agricultural Tax will be a heavy burden on farmers: Chief Minister

Karachi: Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah has stated that terrorism in Pakistan is not an internal issue but is being orchestrated under a foreign conspiracy. He further mentioned that the country’s economic situation is improving, which will benefit the entire nation. He made these remarks during a meeting with the French Ambassador, Nicolas Galey, at the Chief Minister’s House. Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Agha Wasif, and French Consul General, Aleksis Sahtaxtinski, were also present during the meeting.

During the discussion, both sides deliberated extensively on bilateral relations and matters of mutual interest. The Chief Minister highlighted the progress made in rehabilitating the victims of the 2022 floods. He informed that the construction of 2.1 million homes for flood victims is progressing rapidly, while agricultural lands and irrigation systems have also been restored.

Chief Minister Sindh remarked that Pakistan’s economy is on the path to improvement; however, previous economic conditions had impacted development programs. He added that with the current economic recovery, the whole country will reap the benefits. Agricultural tax was also a key discussion point during the meeting. He noted that while the IMF had proposed imposing new taxes on agriculture, the sector was already taxed in the province. He explained that the agricultural tax had been increased from 15% to 45%, which would place a significant burden on farmers.

Speaking on terrorism and security, Chief Minister Sindh reiterated that terrorism in Pakistan is not an internal issue but a result of foreign conspiracies. He asserted that significant control has been gained over terrorism, and security agencies are playing a crucial role. He also emphasized that the law and order situation in Sindh has greatly improved, making it highly favorable for investors.

Chief Minister Sindh stated that the Sindh government has successfully executed major projects under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with more projects underway. He invited French companies to invest in the water desalination sector. In response, the French Ambassador expressed interest in French companies investing in Sindh.

Syed Murad Ali Shah assured that the Sindh government would provide a list of various projects to the French Ambassador to facilitate the entry of French companies into the province.
